Week 3 Starts…

I’m off to the grocery store on my bike today. The hardest part about getting there is getting past all the garage sales!

I’m past the worry of last week and feeling good about our grocery budget. I found amazing fish at Costco; bought 5 meals worth of salmon (wild caught only!) and halibut (wild caught only!) for about $26. Pretty cool. We are camping at the end of the week, so I have to get really creative with The Menu and The List. I will probably go over budget a bit, but I figure that’s OK….we are camping with 2 other families and we are all bringing extra food.

Last night we had leftovers; salmon with green beans and rice, I had mashed potatoes with chicken, the kids had…..bagels of course. L had some smashed beans with cheese too. Tonight I’ll roast some broccoli to add to our Annie’s Soup. I will save some for the Broken Lasagna on Tuesday night.

Using the cash envelope for grocery money is working well. My goals for Week 3 include:

*tracking exact expenses; how much each item cost

*post my weekly menu

*start tracking bulk food and non-food costs; homemade jam, fish, peanut butter, cleaning supplies etc.

*post more pictures!

I think it will be a few months before I have a better idea of bulk food costs. Gotta start somewhere. I have to say though, I don’t feel like we are doing without or eating boring food. I am getting creative with storage and leftovers, we are eating well, and I’m still blogging!

  1. Okay, you inspired me. I started an excel spreadsheet for expenses for August. My “misc” catagory is already blown and its only the 3rd.
I already plan meals, but that could use some tweaking, I guess. I have way too much wasted produce. (That I put in my blender and bury in my yard!)

  2. Whoa! An Excel Spreadsheet…pretty fancy and waaaay too advanced for me! I was thinking about keeping a list. Like with pen and paper :) Blend that extra produce baby! It’s soooo good for your yard! Like Kefir is gooooood for your tummy! I’ll try to focus some of my posts on veggies side dishes. I was thinking about putting together a Demarle Rendez-Vous based on easy dinners and sides for Back to School. Gotta make a list…now where’s my pen…?

  3. Pen? Paper? Sorry, don’t know what you mean…Just kidding! I’m a bigtime list person, just not a numbers person. (I can figure a 50% off sale, though!

  4. I get the feeling that you two know each other – am I right? And I hate Excel anything, I would rather compose by carving things into bark.

I also manage my life by lists, keeping track of them takes another list!
